How do I write code the next person can read?

You can make code work. Getting it to work is the part you have mastered. Writing it so the next person, maybe you in six months, can read and change it without cursing your name, that still slips through your fingers. That is a real and separate skill, and most people underrate how hard it is. Working code answers the machine. Readable code answers a human being who is tired, in a hurry, and missing all the context you have right now. The trick is to keep imagining that person. What would confuse them? What are you keeping in your head that the code does not say out loud? Try this: after something works, read it back as if you had never seen it. Rename the one variable that made you pause. Add the one comment explaining why, not what. Delete the clever line for a plain one. Small edits, done as a habit, are what separate code that runs from code people can live with.
