How long can I keep working as a paramedic after burnout?
Years of trauma calls leave a mark. You have changed, you are paid far less than what you carry, and you are wondering how much longer your body and heart can do this. That is not you being weak. That is a real person doing an inhuman amount and finally feeling the bill come due. You do not have to decide your whole future today. The question is not whether you can do this forever. No one can. The question is what the next season looks like. Sometimes that means a different shift, a different service, a step toward training or teaching. Sometimes it means an honest exit on your own terms. Start by being honest about the cost, not just pushing through. Talk to a medic who left or changed lanes and is glad they did. You gave a lot. Choosing to protect yourself now is not quitting. It is respecting what you have already given.
