I got elected but governing overwhelms me. Where do I start?

Winning an election and running things are two different jobs, and no one is fully ready for the second when it lands. The overwhelm you feel is not a sign you were wrong to run. It is the normal shock of seeing how much the work really involves once the campaign is over. You cannot do all of it at once, so stop trying. Pick the few things that matter most to the people who put you there and start with those. Lean on the people around you who know how the machinery works; you were elected to lead, not to know every detail yourself. Governing is a craft learned by doing, and everyone who does it well was once as overwhelmed as you are now. This week, choose one problem you can actually make progress on and put your attention there. You do not have to fix everything to be a good leader. You have to keep moving on what matters, steadily, without letting the size of the whole thing freeze you.
