My team meetings are just updates that could have been an email. How do I make them useful?

If your meeting is a row of people reading out their status, you have gathered everyone in one room to do something a message could have done alone. Updates are information. They flow fine on their own. The one thing a meeting can do that an email cannot is get people thinking together, and right now yours is not doing it. So the fix is not a better agenda for the updates. It is deciding what the time is actually for. A meeting earns its cost when people wrestle with a real problem, disagree, and reach something none of them had alone. If nobody in the room needs anybody else in the room, there is no reason to hold it. Try this next time. Send the status updates in writing beforehand, and use the gathered time for one real question that has no easy answer. Put it on the table and let people actually work it out loud. It will feel strange at first after so much reporting. Stay with it. A meeting should leave people with something they could not have reached alone.
