How do I stay present with patients when there's never enough time?

This is the ache at the heart of nursing: more need than there is of you, and guilt over the patients you had to rush. Carry it honestly — but don't let it tell you that partial presence is worthless. The patient in front of you gets what you give, not what you wish you could give the whole floor. Treat presence as a skill, not a feeling you wait for. For the few minutes you're at one bedside, be fully there. The system's demands will still be waiting when you look up — they can hold for the length of one human moment. A small, complete act of attention often means more to a scared person than more time given while distracted. And forgive yourself for the limits that aren't yours to fix. You didn't create the staffing or the pace. Give your full care to the one in front of you, and let go of what the system won't let you give. That letting-go isn't a failure of compassion. It's what lets you keep showing up with compassion for years.
