What do I do when competing stakeholders overwhelm me?
Many people, many wants, all pointed at you. Of course it overwhelms. The feeling is not a sign that you are bad at this. It is a sign that you are trying to hold too much in your head at once, as if you had to satisfy everyone before you could move at all. You do not. No one can. The people who look calm in these moments are not holding it all. They have simply learned to put things in order and take them one at a time. Overwhelm is what happens when everything feels equally urgent. Almost nothing is. So make a list. Get every competing want out of your head and onto paper, then mark the one or two that actually matter most right now. Deal with those. Let the rest wait their turn. The chaos in your chest comes from carrying it all inside. Set it down where you can see it, and it becomes a task instead of a storm.
