What do I do when I'm known for work I no longer care about?
People come to you for the thing you built a name in, and you perform an interest you no longer feel. That performance is getting heavier because it is a small daily lie, and lies to yourself cost the most. Your reputation is real, but it has started to feel like a costume you cannot take off. Here is the freeing part: a reputation is something you earned, not a sentence you serve. It proves you can become excellent at something, which means you can do it again in a direction that actually moves you. The expertise is not a cage. It is evidence of what you are capable of, and that capability travels. Start small and honest. Name to yourself what does still interest you, even faintly. Then let a little of it into your work — one project, one conversation, one hour a week. You do not have to torch the reputation. You just have to stop letting it be the whole of who you are.
