What if I freeze on my first real fire?
Every firefighter you look up to once stood exactly where you stand, wondering the same thing behind the same brave face. The fear you feel does not mean you are weak or wrong for the job. It means you understand what is at stake. People who feel nothing are the dangerous ones. You will not rise to the moment. You will fall back on your training. That is the whole point of drilling until your hands know the work without you thinking. When the real one comes, the part of you that practiced will take over. Trust the reps more than you trust your nerves. Stop trying to feel ready and keep getting ready instead. Master the small things now, the tools, the drills, the routines, until they are automatic. Then when the call comes, you will find you already know what to do. The bravado is not the point. The preparation is.
