What if I miss doing the work now that I only manage people?
You entered this field for the work itself, and now you tend the people who do it. That is a real loss, and it is worth naming plainly rather than pretending the promotion should feel like pure gain. You traded the thing you loved doing for the responsibility of helping others do it. Something genuine was given up in that trade. But consider what management actually is when it is done well. It is not the absence of the work. It is the work at one remove. Every person you steer, protect, and grow does more of the thing you love because you are clearing their path. Your hands are off the craft so that more hands can be on it. That is not nothing. For some, it becomes its own deep satisfaction. The mistake is going fully cold on the craft. You do not have to. Keep one small piece of hands-on work for yourself, even a fraction of your time, something that reminds you why you came. And ask honestly whether you want to keep climbing or step back toward the work. Both are respectable answers. Just make it a choice, not a drift.
