What if my skills are right but my industry is wrong?

You are good at what you do, but you are doing it in a sector that does not sit right with your values. The skills are genuine. It is the application that feels wrong. And you have been telling yourself the work is the problem, when really it is where you are pointing the work that has been quietly eating at you. That distinction matters, because it changes what you have to give up. If the work itself were the problem, you might face starting over from nothing. But if the skills are sound and only the sector is misaligned, then what you have built is portable. You could carry the same abilities into a place whose purpose you actually respect, and lose far less than you fear. Start by naming what you want your work to serve — the kind of mission or outcome you could stand behind. Then look for where your existing skills meet it. Have one conversation with someone in that world. You are not throwing away your craft. You are aiming it somewhere you can live with.
