What is my job as a lawyer now that tools do so much of the work?

The ground under your profession is shifting. Tasks that once took you hours now take minutes, and it is natural to ask what that leaves for you. But strip away the tasks and something remains that no tool took: your judgment and your oath. Your oath was never a promise to produce documents. It was a promise to serve justice and to protect the person who trusts you. That duty does not shrink when the busywork does. If anything it grows, because now you have more room to think, to counsel, to see the whole person and not just the file. Try this: let a tool handle a routine task, and spend the time you save on the human part you usually rush. Ask the better question. Explain the hard thing clearly. That is where your worth was all along.
