Why am I afraid to set a clear direction for my team?

You avoid committing to a clear direction because once you say it out loud, it could turn out wrong. So you keep things open and reactive — and your team feels the void. They are working hard with no idea where any of it is going. That fear of being wrong is understandable, but the cost of dodging it is landing on them. A vision was never a promise that you saw the future perfectly. It is a direction, offered honestly, that you are willing to adjust as you learn. Leaders who wait for certainty before committing never commit, because certainty never comes. Meanwhile the people following you need something to aim at. A wrong direction you correct is far better than no direction at all — at least it lets people move, and moving is how you learn what is actually right. So commit to one, out loud, this week. Say where you are taking them and why, and add plainly that you will adjust as you go. That honesty costs you the illusion of always being right, but it gives your team the thing they are starving for: a sense that the hard work is headed somewhere.
