Why do I ask questions instead of accepting feedback?
That clarifying question you reach for is clever, and part of you knows it. It sounds engaged, thoughtful, open. But often it is a small door you slip through to avoid standing in the discomfort of being told you were wrong. You move the conversation from receiving to interrogating, and the feedback never quite lands. Some of the question is genuine, and that is real. But notice the timing. You ask it before you have let the criticism touch you at all. Understanding can wait one breath. First let the feedback be true for a moment, even if you later decide it is not. Try this next time: when feedback comes, say only, thank you, let me sit with that, and stop. Ask your questions tomorrow, once the sting has passed and you can tell genuine curiosity from self-defense. The pause is where the actual learning happens.
