Why do I feel like a fraud when people see me as the expert?

People defer to you, and you spend the whole time braced to be exposed. The gap between the certainty you show and the doubt you feel seems enormous to you. But that gap is not proof you are a fraud. It is proof you are honest with yourself about how much is unknown. Real experts are not people without doubt. They are people who have learned enough to see how much remains uncertain. The loudest confidence often comes from those who know the least. Your private doubt is not weakness; it is the mark of someone who actually understands the terrain. You do not have to pretend to know everything. When you are unsure, you can say, "Here is what I know, and here is what I would need to check." That honesty will not expose you.
