Why do I feel nothing at a job I'm good at?

You are good at your job and you know it. And when you do it, you feel almost nothing — it is completely hollow. That gap is strange and unsettling: the skill is real, the results are real, and yet the experience of it is empty. Being good at something was supposed to feel like more than this. Competence and fulfillment are not the same thing, and one does not deliver the other. You can master work that no longer moves you, and the mastery itself can become part of the trap, because it makes leaving or changing feel foolish. Why walk away from something you do so well? But doing something well is a poor reason to keep giving your one life to something that gives you nothing back. The hollowness is worth listening to rather than overriding. Ask what parts of your work, if any, still have a flicker of life in them, and what outside of work does. Move toward the flicker, even a little. You do not have to solve the whole question at once. You just have to stop treating your competence as a reason to ignore what it is telling you.
