Why do I freeze or take it personally when a guest complains?
When a guest complains and you freeze, it is because your body reads it as an attack. For a second the words feel aimed at you, and you lock up. That reaction is normal, especially early on. It does not mean you are not cut out for this. Here is the shift that helps: a complaint is information, not a judgment. The guest is telling you something is wrong and hoping you can fix it. That is actually a kind of trust. When you hear it as a request instead of an accusation, the freeze starts to loosen. Give yourself one simple line to say while your mind catches up, something like, I am sorry that happened, let me help. It buys you time and it puts you in motion. You do not have to have the answer instantly. You just have to stay in the room and start.
