Why do I measure my worth by my salary and job title?
At some point your pay and your title quietly became the yardstick for your own value, and the unsettling part is that you never actually chose that. It crept in. The world around you measures people that way constantly, and after enough years, their yardstick becomes the one in your own head. It is worth knowing this is a borrowed measure, not a true one. Salary and title reflect a job market, a company, a moment, dozens of things outside you. They say something about your role. They say almost nothing about your worth as a person, and letting them stand in for it leaves you at the mercy of the next raise or the next reorg. You can set down a measure you never chose. Start by catching the thought when it happens, when you rank yourself by a number, and gently name it as a habit, not a fact. Then ask what you would value in a friend. It would not be their title. Begin measuring yourself by the things you would actually respect in someone else.
