Why does building rapport with clients feel so forced?
You know the techniques for building rapport, and that might be exactly why it feels forced. When you are running a method in your head, checking whether you are doing it right, the other person senses the effort, and connection built as a technique never quite feels like connection. The stiffness you feel is you watching yourself. Real rapport is not a move you perform, it is attention you give. The moment you stop managing the interaction and actually get curious about the person in front of you, the forced feeling drops away. You do not have to manufacture warmth. You have to be genuinely interested in what this person's life is like. People can tell the difference between being handled and being seen. In your next session, put the techniques down for a few minutes and just listen, really listen, with no plan for what to do with what you hear. Ask a question because you actually want to know the answer. Connection tends to arrive the moment you stop trying to produce it and simply pay attention.
