Why does civilian life feel so foreign after leaving the military?

You stepped out of the service and into a world that suddenly feels strange, with no clear orders, no obvious mission, people who do not quite understand where you have been. Feeling lost right now is not a sign that something is wrong with you. It is the natural response to leaving one whole world and standing at the edge of another. For years you had structure, purpose, and a place you belonged, all provided. Out here, none of that is handed to you, and the freedom can feel more like emptiness than relief. That disorientation is a stage, not your new permanent state. Nearly everyone who serves goes through some version of it. You are not failing at civilian life. You are new to it. Be patient with yourself the way you would be with any recruit learning a new world. Pick one small piece of structure to build this week, a routine, a goal, one connection with someone who gets it. You do not have to have it figured out. You crossed into unfamiliar ground before and learned it. You can learn this one too, one day at a time.
