Why does my academic job pay so little after all that work?

You did what you were told would work. You studied, you sacrificed, you earned the title. And the reward is a job with no safety, constant pressure to publish, and pay that insults the years you gave. Your anger is fair. You were promised a fair trade and did not get one. Hold two truths at once. The system treated you unfairly, and you still have to live inside it for now. Being right about the unfairness does not pay rent. So separate what you can change from what you cannot. You cannot fix the whole broken market. You can decide how much of yourself it gets to take. Look honestly at your options, even the ones outside academia. Not because you must leave, but because a person with choices carries pressure differently than a person who feels stuck. Spend one afternoon this week just seeing what else your skills could do. Knowing you could walk makes staying a choice instead of a trap.
