How do I cope with seeing problems I feel powerless to fix?
After decades advising growers, you see the system's problems with a clarity most people never reach, and from where you sit you feel powerless to change them. That combination, clear sight and tied hands, is one of the most frustrating places a thoughtful person can stand. The discouragement you feel is the price of seeing truly. But powerless is rarely as total as it feels from inside the weariness. You may not be able to move the whole system, yet you sit in trust with growers who act on your word, year after year. Every better practice you nudge into place, every farmer who listens, is a real change in the real world. The scale is smaller than the problem, but it is not nothing. It's where actual change has always started. Aim your remaining energy where your hands can still reach. Mentor the younger advisors who'll outlast you, push the one reform that's within range, write down what you've learned so it doesn't leave with you. You won't fix it all, and you were never going to. But you can keep moving your corner of it in the right direction, and hand the clear sight forward to those who come next.
