How do I know if I'm actually learning or just going through the motions?
This question itself is the answer beginning to form. Real learning changes how you think—not just what you know. When you're genuinely engaged, you notice yourself making connections, asking new questions, sometimes even disagreeing with what you thought before. You feel a kind of friction, maybe some discomfort. Going through the motions feels hollow by comparison; it's information without integration. Pay attention to what happens after you learn something. Do you find yourself thinking about it days later? Do you explain it differently to different people? Can you apply it somewhere unexpected? These are signs of actual learning. Going through the motions leaves no trace. Here's what I'd suggest: pick one thing you're currently studying and ask yourself honestly—do I care about this beyond the grade or credential? If the answer is no, that's useful information too. Sometimes we need to acknowledge when we're not truly invested, because that clarity lets us either find the real value in what we're doing, or admit we need something different. The examined life includes examining how we learn.
