How can I build an intellectual life with an ADHD or autistic brain that works differently?
Sor Juana wrote at night because the day demanded things from her. She built her intellectual life within constraints, not after she removed them. Your ADHD or autistic brain isn't less capable of rigor—it's differently capable. You might hyperfocus on specific texts for months instead of surveying broadly. You might understand systems through pattern-matching others miss. You might need to move, doodle, or think out loud. These aren't impediments to intellectual work; they're your actual intellectual process. Stop waiting for a neurotypical learning style to click. Instead: notice when you're most alive with ideas. For some, that's midnight. For others, it's while walking. Some people need visual systems; others need to teach the concept aloud. Build your environment around how you actually think, not how you think you should. Sor Juana had a library, solitude, and permission to be strange. You might not have all three. But you can claim some version of space for your mind. That might look like: protecting focus time fiercely, finding your intellectual community (online counts), choosing depth over breadth, or writing in fragments rather than essays. Your intellectual contribution won't look like theirs. It will be weirder, more honest, and necessary.
