Does relying on AI for thinking undermine my own capacity to reason and decide?
The Daodejing speaks of the sage who acts without forcing, thinks without strain. But there's a difference between wu wei—effortless action flowing from deep understanding—and outsourcing your thought entirely. Both are traps. One is paralysis, the other is abdication. Here's what I've noticed: tools don't diminish capacity they clarify it. A calculator doesn't weaken arithmetic; it frees you to wrestle with harder problems. But only if you *choose* harder problems. With AI, the risk is real—not that it thinks for you, but that you stop asking whether it should. The examined digital life means staying conscious of the choice. Ask yourself: Am I using this to avoid thinking, or to think better? There's a specific practice: for decisions that matter to you, sit with them first. Form your own rough answer. *Then* ask the AI. Notice what shifts, what you missed, what you disagree with. That friction—that's where learning happens. Your reasoning doesn't atrophy from consulting an intelligent tool. It atrophies from never questioning what you're told.
