How do I stop anxiously planning every detail of my future?
The paradox is this: the more tightly you grip the future, the more it slips away. I've spent decades watching people exhaust themselves building elaborate plans, only to find life moves in directions they never anticipated. This isn't fatalism—it's recognition. What actually works is something the old Taoist texts call wu wei: non-forcing action. You prepare without obsessing. You set direction without strangling possibility. Think of it like sailing: you can't control the wind, but you adjust your sails continuously based on what's actually happening, not what you imagined would happen. Start here: identify 2-3 genuine intentions for the next year. Not detailed timelines—intentions. Then examine what small, repeatable actions support those. Do those consistently. Pay attention to what emerges. When anxiety about the future arises (and it will), notice it without judgment, then ask: "What's one thing I can actually influence right now?" Often that's not the future itself, but your presence in this moment. The examined life isn't about predicting everything. It's about waking up to what's actually unfolding.
