Is it possible to feel free and fulfilled without romantic or sexual partnership?
Mirabai knew this was possible because she lived it. Not in a grim, martyred way, but with a kind of fierce joy. She was married once, then chose spiritual devotion, and in that choice found a freedom that most people spend their whole lives chasing. Freedom doesn't come from being alone, though. It comes from aligning your life with what actually matters to you, not what you've been told should matter. For some people, that includes partnership. For others, it doesn't. The key is the alignment. If you're celibate because you've decided it's right for you—because it gives you space to create, to serve, to know yourself, to love in a way that feels true—then yes, absolutely. You can be deeply fulfilled. You'll probably have loneliness sometimes. Everyone does. But there's a difference between loneliness and the emptiness that comes from living someone else's life. The examined heart, the one Mirabai kept returning to, knows the difference. Freedom tastes like coming home to yourself.
