Why does my grief come in waves and not get better in a straight line?
Mirabai understood something about the heart that we often forget: it doesn't move in one direction. Her devotion was fierce one moment, tender the next—sometimes breaking open, sometimes closing. Grief works the same way. You might feel almost fine on Tuesday, then Wednesday a song hits and you're undone. This isn't failure. This isn't you 'going backwards.' Your nervous system is still integrating the loss. Anniversaries, seasons, random moments of beauty—they all trigger the waves again, sometimes years later. The non-linear part is actually the part where you're most alive to what happened, most honest about its weight. Instead of expecting yourself to 'move on,' try moving *through*—some days you're moving forward, some days you're moving sideways, some days you're sitting still. All of it is the work. What matters is that you keep showing up to your own heart, the way Mirabai did, examined and awake. Notice which waves carry you somewhere new, even if that somewhere is just deeper understanding of your own capacity to love and grieve at once.
