Why do I feel blocked when creating and how do I move through it?
Creative blocks usually aren't about talent or ideas. They're often about the gap between what you're trying to express and what's actually emerging. Murasaki Shikibu would sit with this gap—not fight it. She'd observe it. What am I noticing about why this isn't flowing? Not 'I'm broken' but 'What's this resistance trying to tell me?' Sometimes blocks signal that you're trying to create someone else's work. Sometimes they mean you haven't actually observed enough yet—you need more material, more lived experience, more time looking at how things actually work. Sometimes it means the work you're making demands something from you that you're not ready to give. The interior life is where blocks live, and it's also where they dissolve. Before you push through, pause. Write badly. Sketch without judgment. Take a walk and notice three specific things. Read something that has nothing to do with your work. The block often lifts not through force, but through returning to observation—which is where all real creation starts anyway. You might find the block was actually just a signal that your practice needed to deepen, not speed up.
