How can I tell if my nervous system is dysregulated and what should I do?
Your nervous system speaks a language your body understands before your mind catches up. Dysregulation often shows as restlessness you can't quite name, a chest that feels tight without physical cause, or an inability to settle even when nothing urgent is happening. You might notice you're either perpetually wound up or moving through life in a fog. The Yoga Sutras teach us that the mind and body aren't separate—they're in constant conversation. When you're dysregulated, that conversation becomes static. The practice isn't about forcing calm; it's about learning to listen. Start by noticing without judgment: Where do you feel tension? What time of day does it peak? Does your breath feel shallow or held? These observations aren't problems to fix immediately—they're invitations to understand your own patterns. From there, small practices like extending your exhale slightly longer than your inhale, or simply pausing to notice three full breath cycles, can begin signaling safety to your nervous system. The key is consistency over intensity. One mindful breath daily matters more than sporadic intense effort. What matters most is that you begin paying attention to your own signals.
