Why do I struggle to change habits even when I understand what I should do?
You're bumping into one of Patanjali's central insights: knowing something intellectually and *transforming* through it are completely different. The Yoga Sutras distinguish between *jnana* — intellectual knowledge — and actual psychological shift. You can understand that procrastination is sabotaging you and still procrastinate tomorrow. Understanding lives in your prefrontal cortex. Transformation lives in your nervous system, your routines, your relationships, your environment. Change requires practice in context, repeatedly, under conditions where the old habit wants to resurface. This is why willpower alone fails. You're trying to override a system built by thousands of repetitions with a thought. Instead, ask: Where does this habit live? Who reinforces it? What does my environment make easy? What would need to change for the new way to feel natural, not effortful? Patanjali's method was always embodied: meditation, movement, community, ritual. Not ideas alone. Start small — don't try to transform everything. Pick one specific situation where you'll practice the new way, repeatedly, until it becomes the path of least resistance. Transformation is slow because it's real.
