Why do I believe things that contradict each other without noticing the conflict?
The mind is not a logical system—it's a survival system. It can hold opposite beliefs simultaneously because each one was useful at different times or in different contexts. You might believe you're capable and also unworthy. Both beliefs exist because both protected you once. Patanjali called this the nature of the vrittis, the mental fluctuations: they layer and contradict without our awareness. The real problem isn't the contradiction—it's that we're unconscious of it. When you're not aware of the conflict, it creates internal friction. You sabotage yourself without knowing why. You work toward a goal while unconsciously pulling away from it. The work is bringing the contradictions into consciousness. Not to 'fix' them through willpower, but to understand which belief is active in which moment. You'll find they're not equally true. One usually comes from fear, one from deeper knowing. Once you see this clearly, the false belief loses its grip naturally. You don't have to force yourself to change. You simply stop pretending the contradiction doesn't exist. That seeing is transformation.
