How do I know if gig work is actually worth my time and dignity?

This question matters more than most people admit. I've watched people chase gig opportunities that paid less than minimum wage once you account for travel, tools, and unpaid labor like invoicing. Start by calculating your true hourly rate—not the posted rate, but what you actually take home after expenses and taxes. Then ask yourself: does this align with what you believe your time is worth? I'm not talking about luxury. I mean basic respect for your own capacity. Some gig work can be dignified and flexible; much of it exploits the appearance of freedom. The difference often comes down to whether you're setting the terms or simply accepting them. If a platform won't tell you upfront what you'll earn, that's a red flag. If the work requires you to absorb all the risk while the company keeps the profit, you're subsidizing their business. Choose work where you can see clearly how value flows. Your time isn't infinite.
