The necessity of income does not corrupt creative work — it has always been there, in every tradition, however the culture chose to make it visible or invisible. The real question is not whether economic life shapes artistic life, because it always does, but whether the maker can preserve what is essential about the work within whatever arrangements money requires. Many have; many have not; the difference rarely comes down to talent or integrity alone.
