History is the study of how human systems — political, social, economic, cultural — behave under varying conditions over time, and its deepest value is the recognition of recurring patterns that illuminate the present and suggest something about the future. The Sutras locate smṛti (memory, including cultural memory) as a category of citta because the mind's understanding of the past shapes how it perceives and responds to the present. History studied as pattern recognition is not determinism but an expansion of the temporal horizon within which current choices can be understood.
Each step builds on the last.
