The failure of religious community is a particular wound because it violates a trust that was offered in vulnerability — the trust that this was a safe place to bring your whole self. Abuse of power, exclusion of the doubting, scapegoating of the different — these things happen in communities that claim to hold the sacred, and they damage both the individuals and the institution. Naming the failure is not faithlessness; sometimes it is the most faithful act available.
Each step builds on the last.
