Dipa Ma taught the Four Foundations of Mindfulness as pillars of stable practice. Applied to postpartum recovery, these become: awareness of the body (its actual condition, not idealized), attention to breath (calming the nervous system triggered by birth), observation of mind (noticing fear, shame, and resistance patterns), and recognition of sensation (learning to distinguish pain that signals danger from discomfort of healing). Many mothers experience postpartum with fragmented embodiment—disconnected from their bodies due to trauma, medical intervention, or survival mode parenting. This framework rebuilds integration piece by piece. First, mothers simply notice: What is my body doing? How am I actually breathing? What thoughts arise? What sensations are present without judgment? Through consistent gentle attention, fragmentation transforms into coherence. The Four Foundations create a scaffolding for returning home to the body, transforming it from a site of danger or shame into a knowable, trustworthy home. This practice supports both physical and emotional postpartum healing.
