The Right to Ambition and Refusal

Sor Juana pursued extraordinary intellectual ambitions while refusing pressures to marry, conform entirely to feminine ideals, or abandon her writing. This concept examines how cisgender people internalize competing demands: Be ambitious but not threatening, nurturing but not subordinate, confident but not arrogant—with expectations varying by gender assignment. The framework distinguishes between healthy ambition rooted in authentic desire and compulsive achievement driven by gendered pressure. For cisgender women, this often means examining whether ambitions are truly theirs or internalized patriarchal demands for achievement and perfection. For cisgender men, it means questioning whether ambition is authentic or a masculine performance hiding vulnerability. Sor Juana modeled a different approach: ambitious in intellectual pursuits, refusal of unwanted roles, and willingness to pay costs for integrity. This concept asks cisgender individuals: What am I ambitious for? What am I refusing? Are these choices authentically mine or reactions to gendered expectations? The goal is not specific ambitions but agency in choosing them, and the courage to refuse without shame.
