The Burden of Respectability

Despite her extraordinary intellectual credentials and religious devotion, Sor Juana faced persistent questioning of her legitimacy and propriety. This concept examines the psychological and social labor imposed on disadvantaged populations who must constantly prove their worthiness, respectability, and deservingness. Systems of class disadvantage operate through a double bind: they demand respectability performance while systematically denying recognition. Working-class and marginalized individuals must work harder, be better qualified, dress appropriately, speak correctly—yet structural barriers remain. This concept names respectability politics as oppressive mechanism rather than legitimate standard. It validates the exhaustion and anger of those constantly performing legitimacy for systems that will deny it regardless. For those experiencing disadvantage, this framework offers permission to question whether respectability performance serves liberation or merely reproduces the systems that demand it.
