Epistemic Justice: Credibility and Climate Truth

Recognizing how power hierarchies determine whose knowledge is believed; ensuring climate truth-telling by marginalized communities receives equal credibility.

Why It Matters

Sor Juana's writings were remarkable partly because a woman dared claim intellectual authority in an era when women's rationality was systematically questioned. Her very existence challenged epistemic hierarchies that determined whose knowledge counted as legitimate. Contemporary climate justice faces similar epistemic injustice: climate scientists are believed, but indigenous land managers whose ecological knowledge prevented disasters for centuries are dismissed. Youth climate activists are patronized. Frontline communities experiencing climate impacts are told they lack expertise. Global North nations set climate policy while Global South nations most vulnerable to climate change have minimal voice. This epistemic hierarchy—determined by race, nation, gender, class—shapes what knowledge becomes policy and what truths remain invisible. Climate justice requires epistemic justice: actively working to recognize and elevate the credibility of marginalized communities' climate knowledge and testimony. This means platforms, funding, and policy influence flowing toward frontline-led solutions. It means listening to those bearing climate burden as authorities on their own experience and needs. Following Sor Juana's insistence on intellectual respect, climate movements must actively resist credibility hierarchies, ensuring that those most affected by climate injustice have their knowledge and voices treated as legitimate, authoritative, and central to solutions.
