Institutional Critique from Within: Working and Resisting Simultaneously

Developing political identity by maintaining critical distance from institutions while necessarily operating within them, resisting cooptation without total rejection.

Juana
Why It Matters

Sor Juana worked within the Catholic Church and Spanish colonial structures while writing critiques of ecclesiastical authority and patriarchal limitations. She did not withdraw entirely, nor did she fully submit. This ambiguous stance—neither complete accommodation nor total rejection—reflects the actual situation of many people forming political identity across cultures. A woman working in a sexist institution faces pressure to either fully assimilate (abandoning feminist consciousness) or entirely exit (losing economic security and institutional access). Indigenous intellectuals in state universities navigate between serving state agendas and advancing indigenous knowledge. Diaspora communities simultaneously work within host nations' institutions and maintain critical-distance relationships to them. Sor Juana's model shows that political identity can be forged through this tension—maintaining critical consciousness while strategically engaging institutions. This requires sophistication: knowing which battles matter, which compromises preserve essential integrity, which critiques can be voiced and which must remain internal. Political identity across cultures often develops through this uncomfortable but necessary simultaneity of institutional participation and institutional critique, rather than through pure resistance or pure accommodation.
