It requires understanding institutional vulnerabilities, knowing when to conform and when to challenge, building coalitions with others navigating similar constraints, and maintaining clear decolonial goals that guide strategic choices. It means recognizing that institutional resources—funding, platforms, credibility—can serve liberation work without necessitating complete institutional loyalty. Sor Juana's example demonstrates that intellectuals from marginalized communities can use institutional positions as bases for independent thought, can protect autonomous work through strategic conformity, and can advance liberation even while constrained by powerful systems.
