Knowledge as a Path to Autonomy

The recognition that intellectual mastery and understanding create the conditions for exercising genuine choice and agency within prescribed social roles.

Juana
Why It Matters

Sor Juana's relentless pursuit of education was simultaneously a pursuit of freedom. By becoming an expert in theology, philosophy, mathematics, and languages, she created intellectual ground from which to negotiate her position in society. This concept reframes Confucian role identity: accepting a role does not mean accepting passivity or ignorance about that role's nature and obligations. Knowledge allows you to understand the deeper principles behind your position, to discern between authentic duties and arbitrary restrictions, and to exercise your role with intention rather than compulsion. Sor Juana's example shows that a woman in a patriarchal Catholic society could, through systematic study, develop the expertise and credibility to defend her own intellectual and spiritual choices. For modern practitioners, this means that education is not a luxury or rebellion but a prerequisite for authentic role engagement. You cannot fulfill your responsibilities well if you do not understand them deeply. Knowledge liberates you to be genuinely responsible.
