The Palimpsest Identity

Multiple layers of identity—biological, chosen, institutional, intellectual—exist simultaneously, each visible and valuable without erasing others.

Why It Matters

Sor Juana's identity functioned as a palimpsest: nun, scholar, poet, woman, Mexican, intellectual, spiritual seeker—each identity layer present and visible without fully erasing any other. Rather than seeking a single unified identity, the palimpsest framework acknowledges that adopted individuals inherit multiple simultaneous identities that coexist in complex relationship. An adopted person carries both biological origins and chosen family, institutional identity and authentic selfhood, given circumstances and chosen paths. The palimpsest model resists the narrative demand that one identity must be primary or that complexity represents fragmentation. Instead, it celebrates the richness of layered identity where meanings accumulate and interact. This concept directly challenges the false choice often presented to adopted individuals: that they must choose between loyalty to origin and loyalty to adoption, between biological and chosen kinship. The palimpsest approach honors the simultaneity of these identities, recognizing that maturity involves learning to read and integrate multiple layers rather than privileging one authentic layer over others.
