Physical Autonomy as Intellectual Foundation

The inseparable link between bodily self-determination and the freedom to think, question, and pursue knowledge without coercion.

Juana
Why It Matters

Sor Juana could not have become a scholar without a degree of physical autonomy—space, time, freedom from forced marriage and reproductive labor. Her intellectual identity depended upon her body being, to some extent, her own. This principle holds today: you cannot think freely if your body is not yours, if you are constantly interrupted, managed, or exploited. Physical autonomy—over your time, your movement, your labor, your sexuality, your health decisions—is not a luxury separate from intellectual life; it is its prerequisite. This concept asks: Where is your bodily autonomy constrained? What would become possible if you reclaimed more of it? How does your physical self-concept either reflect or resist external control? Justice in knowledge begins with justice in the body.
