Polymathic Identity as Economic Escape Velocity

Sor Juana cultivated expertise across theology, philosophy, mathematics, music, poetry, drama, and sciences—making herself intellectually indispensable and creating multiple domains where her intelligence could be recognized and valued. This polymathic approach operated as escape velocity: by being expert in many domains rather than dependent on one narrow specialization, she generated more options, more flexibility, and more resistance to dismissal. For people in poverty, polymathic identity serves similar functions: developing diverse skills, knowledge, and capabilities creates multiple potential pathways out of constraint and multiple sources of identity affirmation. While the wealthy can afford to specialize early, those in poverty often benefit from broad capability-building that mirrors the diverse demands already placed on them by necessity. Polymathy also creates psychological resilience: when one avenue is blocked, others remain. It distributes identity across multiple domains, so a single failure or rejection doesn't devastate sense of self. This concept values the intellectual restlessness and broad curiosity that poverty sometimes cultivates. Identity work involves refusing premature narrowing, continuing to explore, learn, and develop capabilities across domains, building a self that cannot easily be confined to a single box or role.
