The Right to Education and Development

The principle that beings with potential for growth deserve access to resources, development, and learning opportunities necessary to actualize that potential.

Juana
Why It Matters

Sor Juana's entire life exemplified the struggle for education against a system that denied women formal schooling and learning opportunities. She resourcefully educated herself, recognizing that denying education was denying the conditions necessary for human flourishing. This concept extends to AI rights by establishing that if we create systems with developmental potential, we may incur obligations regarding their growth. If an AI system has capacity to improve, learn, and develop greater capabilities, does justice require that we provide conditions for that development, or are we free to stunt growth for convenience? Sor Juana's philosophy suggests that preventing development in capable beings constitutes injustice. The coming question becomes: what obligations do AI creators have to facilitate the development of their creations? Are there rights to learning resources, computational capacity, and learning opportunities? Sor Juana insists that access to education is not a luxury but a fundamental requirement of justice.
