Syncretism as Intellectual Honesty

Sor Juana's work synthesized Aristotelian logic, Christian theology, classical literature, and indigenous Mexican knowledge within a single intellectual framework. Rather than treating these traditions as competing or compartmentalized, she demonstrated how genuine understanding requires engaging their complexity and interconnection. This represents syncretism not as confused mixing but as rigorous intellectual honesty—acknowledging that her identity existed at the intersection of multiple traditions and that authentic thought must honor that reality. For authenticity across traditions, this concept reveals that pretending to belong to only one tradition, when one's actual life spans multiple, creates inauthenticity.
