Reclaiming Time and Attention as Ethical Resources

A recognition that ethical consumption requires investing mental effort and time, and that protecting these resources is itself an act of justice and self-respect.

Why It Matters

Sor Juana's constant struggle was for time and mental space to pursue intellectual work. She fought against demands on her attention and energy that prevented her from thinking and writing. She recognized that intellectual freedom requires the material conditions—time, books, space—to exercise the mind. Ethical consumption similarly requires time: time to research, to question, to seek alternatives, to resist manipulation. In a system designed to make consumption frictionless and automatic, claiming time for examined choice is countercultural. This means protecting attention from marketing manipulation, resisting the pressure to consume constantly, and creating space for reflection. It also means recognizing that ethical consumption requires privilege—the time and resources to seek out fair-trade options, to research companies, to pay premium prices. This awareness should inspire both personal commitment to protecting our own intellectual space and systemic advocacy for conditions where all consumers have the time and resources to choose ethically. Ethical consumption becomes an assertion that our time and attention are valuable, that they deserve protection, and that we refuse to surrender them to systems designed to bypass our conscious deliberation.
