Algorithms and Artificiality: The Question of Authenticity

Algorithms create synthetic environments masquerading as natural, raising questions about children's capacity to distinguish genuine from engineered experience.

Laozi
Why It Matters

The Taoist sage values what is genuinely natural (ziran) over artificial contrivance. Algorithms are pure artificiality disguised as natural discovery—feeds designed to feel organic, recommendations presented as serendipitous, engagement metrics hidden behind friendly interfaces. Children developing their sense of reality encounter engineered experiences constantly, yet most cannot perceive the engineering. A child watching algorithm-selected videos believes they're exploring freely; they're actually following invisible paths optimized for engagement and profit. This creates profound confusion about authenticity. Is this friendship genuine or parasocial simulation? Is this interest mine or manufactured by my feed? What is real discovery versus algorithmic steering? The Taoist approach requires transparency about artificiality—children deserve to see the invisible hand shaping their experience. This isn't naive return to pre-digital purity but clear-eyed acknowledgment of what technology is. When children understand algorithms as tools with built-in biases rather than neutral conduits, they can begin to question their own preferences and choices. Authentic development requires recognizing genuine from manufactured; technology conceals this distinction precisely at ages when discernment is developing.
