Yet modern intellectual property regimes attempt to restore possession-based scarcity in an age of infinite reproduction. True democratization means embracing circulation over possession. This doesn't require eliminating attribution or creator recognition; rather, it means designing systems where knowledge moves freely while creators receive reputation, support, and community recognition. Historical printing networks thrived on this model: printers, booksellers, and readers circulated knowledge through networks of exchange and credit rather than exclusive ownership. Modern platforms embodying this principle use open licenses, enable remixing and adaptation, facilitate sharing without permission barriers, and recognize that knowledge's value increases through circulation. Circulation-based systems create abundance thinking: knowledge shared becomes multiplied rather than depleted. Platforms can sustain creators through patronage, reputation, community support, and alternative revenue models rather than monopolistic control. Laozi teaches that true wealth comes from flow, not possession; knowledge systems honoring this principle become more democratic and ultimately more valuable to everyone.
